When connecting to The Internet, you want to be reasonably sure you are connecting to a safe enough network. There is always a risk that the wireless network you are connecting to has not been provided with "Security", or "Protection" in mind. Connecting to it may leave your own computer open to attack.
Safer networks
The safer networks are:
- Eduroam (If available to you, this should be your first choice network to attach to)
- your own private home network
- wireless networks run by an institution or company you are visiting
Less-safe (or insecure) networks
Insecure networks are often:
- those found in cafes, bars, in the street, …
- public networks that do not require a password to access
- public networks that require your email address, or other personal details to allow you to join
It's important to use University VPN while you are working remotely, especially if you are dealing with sensitive information. It helps not only hide passwords from an eavesdropper, but also provides a degree of privacy, since it hides the content of your data.
The link below instructs you how to use the VPN service.
