Fraud, Phishing and Social Engineering

This one-hour workshop provides a look at the means of contact and the emotional triggers that criminals use to commit fraud and perpetrate scams against staff and students at the University. 

During the session you will learn about common scams such as: 

  • 419 scams
  • Fake investments
  • Dating scams
  • Fake blackmail
  • Tech support scams

You will study real attacks against the University, identifying how they could be detected and how they encourage their targets to fall for them. By encouragaing better critical thinking and knowing the signs of malicious activity, you can make yourself a harder target for criminals. 

 

The Internet Survival Guide

The internet can be a dangerous place, but with some basic skills, it can be a lot safer. This one-hour workshop teaches the basic concepts of good cyber security habits to help you stay safer online. 

During the session the following areas will be explored: 

  • Knowing what you have
  • Protecting your devices
  • Passwords
  • Back ups
  • Encryption
  • Better Awareness

 

An Introduction to Information Security

This hour long workshop provides an overview of the role of the Information Security Directorate within the University, highlighting the main areas of work the team are involved in. The second half of the talk covers the background to threats such as email phishing, social engineering, mobile security, and ransomware as well asTop tips to help you stay more secure.

 

Mobile Security

This one hour talk provides a high level overview of mobile phones and the security landscape they operate within, the attack surface along with examples of threats are highlighted along with top ten security tips to help with securing mobile devices.

 

Practical Encryption for staff and students

This one-hour session will be a look at why we need to encrypt our data and how we can go about it using a number of common use cases (secure transmission to a third party, storage of research data, keeping a secret repository for personal use).

This one hour talk outlines the main reasons why, in an increasingly connected data-sharing world, information security is vitally important for everyone both at home and at work. Top tips to help you stay more secure are included.
